Direct Answer
Getting rid of an asbestos shed, properly
Garden sheds, coal stores, outhouses and drying sheds built before 2000 very often have an asbestos cement roof, and the concrete sectional sheds sold through the 60s, 70s and 80s frequently paired precast walls with a corrugated cement roof. It is usually bonded material in fair condition, which is the lower-risk end of asbestos work — but it still needs controlled handling and cannot go in a skip.
The roof sheets come off first: dampened, fixings cut or unscrewed with hand tools, and each sheet lowered whole rather than broken up. They are wrapped and labelled, and if you want the whole shed gone we then dismantle the rest and keep the asbestos separate from the ordinary waste. The asbestos goes to a licensed facility on a special waste consignment note, which you keep.
A garage is a bigger version of the same job — see asbestos garage removal — and already-wrapped sheets can simply be collected through our asbestos disposal service.
Our work scope
Asbestos cement shed roofs and wall panels are non-licensed work when they come off whole under controlled conditions. Occasionally an older shed or workshop is lined inside with insulating board, which is licensable and legally requires an HSE licensed contractor — if we see board rather than cement, we stop, have it sampled and tell you honestly what it means.

Controlled From Start To Finish
How the work is carried out
- 01
Confirm the material
A photo is often enough to plan; where it isn't, a lab-tested sample confirms the roof is asbestos cement before the job is priced.
- 02
Clear and protect
Contents are moved out, the ground around the shed is protected, and the route to the vehicle is agreed so nothing crosses the house.
- 03
Remove whole
Sheets are dampened and lowered intact with hand tools; if the whole shed is going, the structure is dismantled after the asbestos is out.
- 04
Wrap and consign
Asbestos waste is wrapped, labelled and taken to a licensed facility on a consignment note, and the base is left clean.
A Useful Quote
What affects the price?
A photograph, postcode and approximate dimensions are often enough for an initial estimate. A fixed quote follows once the material and access are clear.
- Roof only, or the whole shed taken down and cleared
- Size of the shed and whether the walls are cement panels too
- Condition of the sheets — cracked or brittle sheets take longer
- Access from the garden to the street for wrapped waste
- Whether the base or slab is also to be broken out
- Other asbestos jobs on the same visit, which share the fixed costs
Indicative Prices
What asbestos shed removal costs
Indicative UK market ranges in 2026, including disposal and the consignment note. Small jobs carry fixed set-up and disposal costs, so combining them with other work on one visit is the easiest saving.
| Job | Typical UK range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Shed roof sheets only | £250 – £500 | Typical garden shed; size and condition move it |
| Whole timber shed with cement roof | £400 – £700 | Asbestos removed first, then the frame dismantled |
| Concrete sectional shed or workshop | £600 – £900 | More to dismantle; panels may also contain asbestos |
| Coal bunker or bin store roof | £150 – £350 | Cheapest when done alongside other work |
| Collection of already-wrapped sheets | £150 – £350 | Only if properly double-wrapped and labelled |

Common Questions
Asbestos Shed Removal in Glasgow FAQs
How much does asbestos shed removal cost?
Roughly £250–£500 for the roof sheets of a typical garden shed and £400–£900 to take the whole shed down and leave the base clear, depending on size, condition and whether the walls are cement panels too. Coal bunker and bin store roofs can come in lower, particularly on the same visit as other work. Every quote is free and fixed after we've seen photographs or the shed itself.
Can I remove an asbestos shed roof myself?
Not automatically. No Scottish law bans a homeowner from taking down lower-risk bonded material — an asbestos cement shed roof, say — at a property they live in, though we'd talk you out of it. Licensable materials such as pipe lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board legally require an HSE licensed contractor wherever they are. And disposal is regulated whoever does the removal: asbestos is special waste in Scotland, it can't go in a skip or a bin, and the duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 traces the waste back to you. Do the same work in a rented, factored or commercial building and you're not a homeowner doing DIY any more — you're a dutyholder, and CAR 2012 applies in full.
Is my concrete shed asbestos?
The precast concrete wall panels of most sectional sheds are ordinary concrete, but the corrugated roof on sheds of that era is very often asbestos cement, and some panels and window infills used it too. A lab-tested sample is the only way to be sure, and it costs far less than guessing wrong.
Do I need a skip for an asbestos shed?
Not for the asbestos — it cannot legally go in a general skip in Scotland, and most skip firms will refuse the whole load if they find it. The timber, glass and concrete from the rest of the shed can go in a normal skip once the asbestos has been taken away separately.
