Test the tile and adhesive as separate layers
Older thermoplastic and vinyl tiles can contain asbestos, and the dark bitumen adhesive beneath them may also be suspect. One layer can test positive while the other is negative, so a useful sampling plan identifies what is actually being disturbed by the new flooring work.
Tiles are normally lifted using hand methods chosen to keep them as intact as possible. The subfloor is then assessed against the agreed scope. Removing every trace of adhesive is not always necessary and aggressive mechanical grinding can create more risk than leaving a thin, stable residue beneath a suitable new floor system.
Before quoting, we need to know the result you need after removal: exposed subfloor, a surface ready for levelling compound, or simply clearance for another contractor. That practical endpoint determines the method, time and cost far more than the room name does.

What do asbestos floor tiles look like?
There is no reliable visual test. Older rigid tiles are often small, thin and patterned, but asbestos-free products can look identical. Property age and tile size can guide a sampling decision; only laboratory analysis confirms the contents.
Does black floor-tile adhesive contain asbestos?
Some older bitumen adhesives did and many did not. Because the adhesive is a separate material from the tile, it may need its own sample when the planned work will scrape, level or otherwise disturb it.
Can new flooring go over asbestos tiles?
Intact, well-bonded tiles can sometimes remain beneath a compatible floor system. The right choice depends on condition, moisture, floor levels and whether future fixings will penetrate the layer. The location should still be recorded for anyone altering the floor later.
Will you grind away all of the old adhesive?
Not automatically. Grinding a suspect adhesive can release avoidable dust. We agree the required finish in advance and choose a controlled method; in some cases a stable residual layer is better managed beneath an appropriate covering system.
